435, 458 uncollected PVCs worry Imo REC, outsources means of distribution to registrants

About 435,458 uncollected Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) are currently at the 27offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), domiciled at the various 27 Local Councils of Imo State.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, disclosed this in Owerri while interacting with the stakeholders of the commission, comprising members of the State Inter-Agency Committee on Security, State Inter- agency Committee on Voter Education and Publicity, Civil Societies Organizations, leaders of political parties, representatives of trade unions and associations and other electoral partners, noting that as at July 13, only 8,267 registrants collected their PVCs out of 72,012 new cards deployed to the state last year, decrying the apathy despite all the awareness, sensitization and publicity carried out by the commission in the state involving all the 27 councils in the state as well as the media and other partners. The sensitization programme was led by the REC.

Prof. Ezeonu disclosed that within the period under review, a total of 318,153 were registered in Imo, comprising 172,561 males and 145,592 females, saying that Imo was the 11th in hierarchy ranking in the 36 states, in the registration and PVC collection, urging the public who know better legal means of reaching the owners of the PVCs to bring forward the ideas provided that such are within the ambit of the law.

Ezeonu said in line with the national directive, the registration will end on August 17, explaining that the exercise will be going on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays until the deadline, while the collection of PVCs will continue until a week to the general elections. He disclosed that over 19,000 ad-hoc workers were expected to work for the commission in the state next year, stressing that adequate training would be given to them.
