ASABA—THE Society for Peace Studies and Practice, SPSP, has vowed to uphold the unity of Nigeria and continue to fight corruption in the country.

By Festus Ahon

Rising from its 10th annual convention with theme ‘Curbing Corruption and Building Sustainable Peace’ held in Asaba, Delta State, the group in a communique by its President, Olagbamiji Oyebode, Secretary Adeola Adams and one other, said that corruption was a major obstacle that has impeded sustainable peace and development since the nation gained independence in 1960.

They decried the systemic decay, lopsided criminal justice system, poverty, unemployment, greed, inconsistent government policies, politicized anti-corruption agencies, moral decadence among youths and lack of political will on the part of the leadership to account for the high level of corruption and the prolonged sense of insecurity being witnessed in various parts of the country.

The group which also elected new executives to pilot its affairs for the next three years lamented that corruption has continued to fester because the political class and the media has elevated the culture of impunity in public affairs by failing to adhere strictly to the rules of the game.
