Mahama cuts sod for 50 Community Day SHS today

President John Mahama will today, March 3, cut the sod for work to start on the first batch of 50 new Community Day Senior High Schools at Nyanoa, near Adeiso in the Upper West Akyem District of the Eastern Region.

This will be the first ever Senior High School constructed for the people of Nyanoa and 50 other such communities across the country.

In his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Tuesday, 25th February, President Mahama promised to cut the sod for the construction of the first 50 schools, as part of a total of 200 new Community Day Senior High Schools to be built across the nation.

The new schools will help government fulfill the objective of expanding and improving access to secondary education in the country.

“Existing secondary schools have a capacity to absorb only 60% of the students who qualify from Junior High School. Because of the high demand for secondary education, existing schools have been compelled to admit much higher than they were designed to accommodate,” President Mahama explained.

“This has led to circumstances in which there are some schools with as many as 3,000 students, twice the prescribed average of 1,500.”

Government has secured funding for the new schools, and each project is expected to take 18 months to complete.
