SURE-P gives N69m to pregnant women – To motivate women access antenatal care as well as skilled delivery, the Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) has disbursed more than N69 million to pregnant women, that patronised its 74 facilities under the programme.

Project Director, SURE-P Maternal Child Health, Dr Okoli Ugo, made this disclosure at the opening of a two-day policy dialogue session in Abuja, which was organised by University of Ibadan Centre for Population and Reproductive Health, in conjunction with Woodrow Wilson Information Centre for Scholars.

Dr Okoli, who declared the programme functional in 18 states of the federation, said 42,017 people had benefitted from the programme this year, adding that this had ensured an increase in demand for antenatal care by 81 per cent over the 2012 baseline.

The expert added  that over 84 per cent of women, had 100 per cent antenatal attendance at these health facilities because of the N5,000 cash incentives that came with the programme.

Dr Okoli, said the programme, which will come to an end in 2015, had recorded a 47 per cent drop in maternal deaths in participating health facilities.
