OYO State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, on Monday, caught members of the state executive council unawares, as he dissolves the council after weeks of speculation exclusively reported by the Nigerian Tribune. Nigerian Tribune, it will be recalled, had, on Friday, August 16, reported under the headline “Oyo braces up for cabinet reshuffle.” Sources informed the Nigerian Tribune that the governor resumed on Monday morning, already waiting for members of the cabinet at the Executive Chamber. It was further gathered that the members were surprised at the order that they should drop all their gadgets, including mobile phones, before they joined the governor at the chamber. The governor, in his 11-minute briefing, thanked all of them for their contributions to the administration but expressed his dissatisfaction over leakages of confidential report from government’s quarters. According to the sources, the governor said he had expected members to fully obey their oath of offices, but was disappointed as a result of the conduct of some of them, while he wished them goodbye, with an order that they could re-apply. Minutes after, some goodies and sorts meant for the weekly meeting were seeing being returned. At the reception of the governor’s office, some of the affected commissioners were seeing making calls to their drivers. None of them was, however, willing to speak with journalists, while the governor went to the airport to receive Vice President Namadi Sambo, who was scheduled to pay condolence visit to the widow of Dr Olusegun Agagu. However, three of the the members of the executive still made the governor’s entourage to Agagu’s house. Director of the Cabinet, Mr Dotun Omokemi, in a press release confirming the dissolution, said “there was the need to inject fresh blood into the administration, in the quest to serve the state better. “The governor thanked the commissioners and special advisers who made up the executive council for their contributions so far and asked them to hand over to permanent secretaries in their various ministries.” Meanwhile, Governor Ajimobi, who had earlier accompanied the vice president on a condolence visit to the house of Agagu, said the dissolution of the state cabinet was a normal exercise aimed at injecting fresh blood into governance. “We have worked for two years and we have functioned very well together. It is a normal process in government, it’s a time to review and those that are qualified will be considered, while fresh blood will also be injected,” he said. When asked on the likely time for the composition of the new cabinet, Ajimobi said “very soon.”

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, slated September 20 to commence hearing on the suit filed before it by the Bamanga Tukur led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, seeking to declare activities of the "New PDP" illegal. Justice Elvis Chukwu who presided over the case Friday, said he would hear both the substantive suit and preliminary objection filed against it by the respondents, led by the factional chairman of the party, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, on the same day. Other respondents who yesterday urged the court to dismiss the suit as lacking in merit included former Vice President, Atiku Abukakar, national secretary of the splinter group, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Baraje's deputy, Dr Sam Jaja. It was the contention of the respondents that the suit not only lacked competence, but constitutes a domestic affair of a political party. While challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter, members of the 'new PDP', insisted that the case ought to have been filed before a state or FederalCapitalTerritory high court. Arguing through their lawyer, Mr Raji Ahmed, SAN, the Baraje group, maintained that "This action is incompetent and this Court lacks the jurisdiction to hear it. The subject matter revolves around the domestic affairs of Peoples Democratic Party. "It is only in matters within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal High Court under section 251 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) that can be competently entertained in this Court. "The subject matter herein is not cognizable under section 251of the 1999 Constitution, and this Court does not have the jurisdiction to entertain it." Consequently, they asked the court for "an order striking out the suit in its entirety for lack of jurisdiction." Meantime, determined to halt activities within the camp of the faction, Tukur and eleven national officers of the PDP, urged the court to restrain the four respondents from parading themselves as officials of the party. Equally joined as a respondent in the suit was the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
