FG signs MoU for expansion of 15,000 housing units – Mrs Akon Eyakenyi, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, explained the Federal Government would intensify its partnership along with investors to deliver massive housing plans for low income earners.
Eyakenyi spoke at the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between Basap Ventures International Limited and the ministry in Abuja on Monday.
The MoU was for the development of 15,000 housing units for low-income earners across the country.
Eyakenyi said the event was a milestone to provide affordable houses for Nigerians, adding that the sector was being revitalised through the development of new policy frameworks and long-term action plans.
She, therefore, called on investors and developers who were still willing to partner with the ministry to come on board and join in providing adequate shelter for the citizenry.
“The Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development will continue to collaborate with key actors and operators in the housing sector for improved and efficient housing delivery to the majority of Nigerians.
“The signing of MoU between the Basap group and the ministry is for the construction of 15,000 highly affordable low-income houses across the country starting with 2000 houses in Gwagwalada to be delivered within 12 months.
“This event is in consolidation of our effort in identifying and partnering with different operators in the housing sector,” she said.
The minister said that this was particularly important “between developers, building material producers, investors and the three tiers of government with a view to maximising inputs and outputs in the delivery of housing,’’ she said.
In his address, Mr Anthony Adepoju, Managing Director, Basap Group, thanked the Federal Government for the privilege to carry out the project.
Adepoju said that it was their first time to engage in such partnership, adding that the company had inspected the site and would move there to start work this week.
He said that within the next 100 days, several achievements would have been recorded, noting that the houses would be as affordable as it could be for low income earners.
“The houses would be as cheap as possible, especially since they are in the rural areas.
“We have our own off takers because we are building on behalf of the NNPC Staff quarters so we have a benchmark which the ministry has already specified.
“We are, however, appealing to the government for an access road that will link the site with the Abuja-Lokoja highways to be constructed to open the site,’’ Adepoju said.
Adepoju said the road would enhance the viability of the project and serve the communities better, adding that the financier of the housing project was willing to also take up the road project.
