Lagos task force serves demolition notice on shanties in Oko-Oba

Landlords and tenants living around Abattoir and Oko-Oba area of Lagos State may soon breath a sigh of relief as the Lagos State task force has decided to evict those living in shanties in the neighbourhood.

The shanty occupiers have been served eviction notice preparatory to the demolition of the illegal structures.

The Lagos States government gave the seven-day grace to remove all illegal structures/shanties including containerized shops with their belongings immediately.

Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a newly promoted Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), led the team, who served the notice. He disclosed that over 2,500 illegal structures/shanties, including containarised shops were served ‘Removal Order’ within abattoir and Fagba area by railway side, Agege.

According to him, the illegal shanties were occupied by miscreants who allegedly terrorised innocent citizens around Agege area by dispossessing them of their valuables such as phones, wallets and jewelries both early in the morning and late at night.

According to him, “it was an eye-sore with miscreants and hoodlums freely smoking and selling Indian hemp including prostitution by under-age boys and girls around the area.”

The task force chairman noted that the shanties are contributing to the growing concern of health, environment and safety issues in and around Agege area.

He said the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, has directed that immediately after the expiration of the ‘Removal Notice” any miscreants or hoodlums arrested will be charged to court for prosecution.

“Furthermore the Lagos State Commissioner of Police has directed that the Chairman of Taskforce should carry out raids on all criminal hideouts and black-spots across the state,” he said.
