Shippers Council partners with NJI to develop maritime sector

The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) is coming together to hold a maritime seminar that will address some of the critical challenges in the maritime sector.

Themed, “Sustainable Development in the Maritime sector in Nigeria”, the seminar which will take place at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja on June 12th and 13th, will take a critical view of varying aspects of maritime activities in the country such as, admiralty jurisdiction, piracy, armed robbery at sea and maritime boundaries in Nigeria, charter parties, lay time and demurrage, with particular focus on section 20 of the Admiralty Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, liability of terminal operators, and marine insurance in relation to oil and gas.

Speaking on the forthcoming event, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers Council, Hassan Bello announced that the Maritime Seminar for Judges will highlight and address vital legal challenges in the maritime sector.

“These include, admiralty jurisdiction, piracy, maritime boundaries in Nigeria, charter parties, issues on lay time and demurrage, an overview of section 20 of the Admiralty Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, liability of terminal operators, amidst other significant maritime issues,” he said.

According to Bello, those expected to speak at this event, include, “former Chief Judge, Federal High Court, Justice Abdullahi Mustapha (rtd), Prof. Akin Oyebode, Dr. Wale Olawoyin, Chidi Ilogu, SAN, former Director-General, NIMASSA, Mfon Usoro, Vicky Haastrup, Prof. Ademun-Odeke, Funke Agbor, Oritsematosan Edodo-Emore amongst several others.
