Sokoto – Over 140 people are to be sponsored for a mass wedding ceremony in Sokoto, the state commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Alhaji Tsalha Sidi Mamman, disclosed yesterday.
The commissioner said the state government would sponsor the event to be held for widows, divorcees and youths.
Mamman stated this at the orientation workshop organized by the ministry in collaboration with the Sokoto State branch of the Sunnah Mediation Union of Nigeria at the Youths Development Centre Sokoto.
The commissioner who was represented by Director Youths Development, Alhaji Bello Umar Alkali, said the orientation programme was organized for couples in preparation for the mass wedding.
According to him, 100 people – 50 males and 50 females – would be joined in marriage under the first phase of the mass wedding initiative.
The commissioner disclosed that the state government would be responsible for the provision of household items for the couples as well as assist the grooms to engage in small scale businesses to maintain their families.
He urged the beneficiaries of the programme to make best use of the opportunity and ensure they remain responsible members of the society.
He said the orientation programme provided opportunity for officials from Sokoto State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SOSACA) to examine the statuses of the couples before the wedding ceremony.
In a remark, state chairman of Sunnah Mediation Union of Nigeria, Mallam Aliyu Bello, lauded the state government for introducing the programme noting that it would have positive impact on the society. He described it as the first of its kind in the state.
