Troops Killed Several Boko Haram Fighters In Night Ambush

Troops of Operation Desert Sanity in Nigeria have reportedly ambushed suspected fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), killing many of them in Yobe State.

According to the Nigerian Army, the troops ambushed the terrorists and killed a yet-to-be-ascertained number of them.

Several others escaped with fatal gunshot wounds in the encounter, the army said.

It added that weapons, ammunition, mobile phones and a motorcycle were recovered from the insurgents.

“BREAKING: Troops of Operation Desert Sanity on Monday 29 August 2022 neutralized several ISWAP/BokoHaram terrorists during a successful night ambush operation around Tamsun Ngamdu general area in Yobe State,” Nigerian Army said on its official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

“Troops also recovered weapons, ammunition, mobile phones & a motorcycle.”

Since the death of Abubakar Shekau, who was the leader of Boko Haram, also known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād or JAS, ISWAP has been consolidating its grip in locations around Lake Chad.

The sect’s membership reportedly increased with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters following Shekau’s death.

The Nigerian Army has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency had been largely defeated while the military frequently underplays any losses.

The terror group has caused the death of thousands of people and displacement of millions of others, mainly in Northeast Nigerian states – Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe.
