The Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) has described the statement credited to the director general of Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), Emeka Ezeh, in the media that no Nigerian firm produces electricity transformers as misleading and a gross disservice to the Nigeria content development initiative.
The president of NSE, Engr. Ademola Olorunfemi, said over the weekend that the statement was worrisome coming from an institution of government that is supposed to take keen interest in the commerce and industry sector of the economy.
To set the record straight, the NSE president disclosed that there are two major electricity transformers manufacturing companies fully licensed and in full operation in Nigeria namely, Danelec FZE and Elsewedy Electric Company Limited.
While Danelec FZE is the first indigenous manufacturer of 3-phase distribution transformer insulated in mineral oil/resin located in Calabar, Cross River State, Elsewedy Electric was established in 2008 in Lagos State with an investment sum of $20 million and has diversified its operations and extended its production lines.
