Ondo currently the largest baby producer in W/Africa

In one year there are 7,600 safe pregnancies entered into the season under the Mother and Child Pet Project of the Ondo State governor’s wife.

Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, made this known at the weekend, in Akure, the state capital, during a vigil marking the 65th edition of Divine Agenda Praises, organised monthly by his government for citizens of the state.

He said the multiple birth delivery rate in Ondo State ranked  as the largest in Nigeria and West African sub-region in one tertiary maternity centre

Mimiko told the congregation during the vigil that the high rate of birth in Ondo State notwithstanding, the mortality rate, had been amazingly low.

He said as part of efforts by his government to make life worth living for the people of the state, most especially women, all deliveries had attracted no cost.

Mimiko, who gave out the report during testimonies time  with his wife during the vigil, earned applause from the congregation when he said only 15 fatal cases had been recorded so far in the barrage of deliveries which he said included cesarean  sections .

He said while the Mother and Child pet project recorded 7,600 safe birth in 2003 alone, the largest health institution in Nigeria had only 2,500 deliveries.

According to him, as low as that figure, mortality rate was all time high with 63 fatal cases.

He said the maternity centres in Ondo state under Mother and Child initiative produce an average of 20 babies per day, making Ondo state the largest baby manufacturing state in Nigeria.

He, however ,allayed the  fear that the trend of huge outpouring of babies in Ondo had not  been putting pressure on the population of the state.

According to him, statistics had shown that the babies were being delivered mainly by women with their first pregnancies or those who were having their second pregnancies.
