Cairns house where 8 children killed to become memorial

Cairns house where 8 children killed to become memorial – The house where 8 kids were killed on Friday will likely be removed to make way for a memorial, confirmed on Monday by MP Gavin King.

Raina Mersane Ina Thaiday, 37, has been charged with the murder of four of her sons and three of her daughters, along with her niece.

Ms Thaiday, who was also known as Mersane Warria, remained under guard at the Cairns Base Hospital and her case is due to be heard again in Cairns Magistrates Court on January 30.

Standing in the park adjacent to number 34 Murray Street, Manoora, Mr King said a memorial to the children would be built in place of the government-owned house.

Just what shape that memorial would take, Mr King said, would be a matter for the family, local residents and the wider affected community.

“I’ve been here since Saturday morning and I haven’t had anyone say that they would like that house to stay,” he said.

Mr King said one option was extending the park to the west, taking in number 34.

“Over time, after extensive consultation, after extensive planning and careful consideration of a range of factors, we will remove the house behind me,” he said.

“…Some of the early suggestions may be that we simply extend this current park, but the details of what that will look like, the details of the timing of the removal of the house and the building of the memorial, it is too early to say.”

Mr King said the process, to be led by the Cairns Safer Streets Taskforce, was likely to take “months”.

Queensland Police Service Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said forensic officers would remain in the house for at least several days yet.
